I was thrilled to see that The Great Russian Nutcracker would be coming to the Kirby Center in Wilkes Barre. This art deco style theater was refurbished nearly thirty years ago and is an amazing place to see a show. It is just the perfect size for the event.
The Nutcracker is a rite of passage that I wanted my five year old to share in. The question was, would the performance hold her attention and beyond that would she enjoy the show? To add to the excitement of a fancy night out at the ballet, we brought along Cecily’s friend and her mother. The girls got all dressed up and put on their best manners for the event.
The ballet was amazing! Though both girls had many questions and a lot of feedback which included counting each dancer in the scenes, they sat well (as in we only got one dirty look) and truly took away a lot from the performance. What was their favorite part? Cecily’s response was, “Everything, I liked it all.” Later on she recalled to her brother about the three headed rat and watched clips of her favorite dance which was the Arabian Variation.
The performance was highlighted by ornate costumes in bright and vivid colors, detailed backdrops that appeared to be hand-painted, graceful movement and awe inspiring feats of poise and strength. The ballet included a group of local dancers who danced along side the 40 professional dancers. What a thrill for these local students to participate alongside such talent in such an elaborate and perfectly done production. The ballet tours the country and locally will be Easton this weekend.
We were provided with the tickets for the performance in exchange for this honest review. I believe this will be a new tradition for us. There is something very special and memorable about getting dressed up for the theater and watching an amazing production of this holiday ballet!
